The Celebration Overture, written in honor of the 50th anniversary of KUHF radio in Houston, Texas, is both celebratory and optimistic. A fanfare opening by the trumpets is reminiscent of the rhythmic patterns that radio news programs opened with when I was a child. Interspersed with this idea is a playful theme. These two ideas generate the material for the entire overture. As the brass continues with the syncopated fanfares, the strings launch a soaring augmentation of the playful theme. The horns later join the strings in canon. Finally the two themes dance wildly as partners in a tribute to a “great classical music station.”
